Sunday AM Notes – Woe Is Me A Man Undone and Unclean Lips
Isaiah 6:1-12
Isaiah 6:1
1. Isaiah’s vision in Chapter 6 if THE LORD was a preincarnation appearance of Christ (OT prior to the Cross)
2. Isaiah’s calling, conversion and cleansing are see here; Having pronounced six woes upon others pronounces the last and greatest woe upon himself crying out he was a moral leper and justly doomed to death
3. This is confirmed by the Holy Spirit in John 12:37-41 as to what Isaiah saw. The New Testament always confirms the Old; the Old contains revelation of the New
4. The vision of Isaiah places Jehovah (CHRIST) in the midst of guilty and lost men (LEPER) just as He is seen at Golgotha for there they crucified two thieves with Him placing Him in their midst. UZZIAH died a leper in 759 B.C.
5. This vision was received 38 years prior to the Northern Kingdom being taken captive by Assyria and 150 years or so before Babylon took Judah captive.
Isaiah 6:2 – The Seraphim
A. Six Wings
B. Two Covered His Face
C. Two Covered His Feet
D. Two Others He Did Fly
1. Means “FIERY ONES” Only mentioned ONCE here in Scripture – Positioned ABOVE the THRONE and Led in the WORSHIP OF GOD. CP Cherubim of Ezkiel 1, 10:8, Revelation 5:6
2. Cried unto another – HOLY HOLY HOLY, The Lord of Hosts, the who Earth is FULL of His Glory! – Heaven Worships God as a THRICE HOLY GOD!
3. “One Cried” means “Kept Crying” – Day and Night – HOLY HOLY HOLY – Speaks of the Holiness of God and the TRINITY
4. It is FUTILE for man’s self-righteousness to produce Holiness or believe our works can make us holy! To Be frank the MORE we know Christ, the MORE unholy we see ourselves.
6. Holiness is IMPARTED not earned! The only way the believer can be holy is a direct result of His grace that we can ever begin to be worthy of. The Righteousness of Christ is the only way we can claim holiness. (WITHOUT SUCH NO MAN CAN SEE THE LORD)
Isaiah 6:3-4- The Throne of God And Our Worship
1. Isaiah 6:3-4 - The Vigorous Nature of the Worship Shook the Threshold of the Divine Temple and the Holy Place was filled with SMOKE
2. John the Revelator saw the throne of God in Revelation 4-5 unlike any other
A. Seven Lamps of Fire
B. Lightnings and thundering, voices proceeded out from the Throne
C. Seven Lamps of Fire- Seven Spirits of God (Isaiah 11:2)
D. The Throne and Temple were identical in nature in these two visions.
3. The Whole Earth is full of His Glory – even though Createion due to the Fall doesn’t seem to show it; The Creation GROANS and will do so until Jesus Returns at th Second Coming.
4. The Heavens are going to rejoice with a display of Glory such as the world has never known when Christ returns! Matthew 24:27-30
5. 6:4 – Posts of the Door MOVED – With the CRIES of the Seraphim- Worthy is the Lamb cp. Revelation 5:6
6. House Filled With SMOKE – Exodus 19:18, 20:18, Rev. 15:8; Typified anger, not at Isaiah but at Judah; God’s wrath is filling up heaven over man’s rebellion; Cross is the only thing that stands in the way of this.
Isaiah 6:5-6 – WOE IS ME
1. Isaiah sees this and declares WOE IS ME- this is the most important declaration of all humanity in view of Christ! It’s the most important declaration of the CHURCH.
2. In Isaiah 5 Isaiah pronounced six woes upon Judah; now he pronounces it on himself
3. The Church pronounces WOE on the nation but it doesn’t pronounce WOE on itself
4. The sinless KING OF GLORY is to be contrasted with the leprous KING in Verse 1 (UZZIAH)
5. This statement of Isaiah marks TRUE repentance, not the proclamation of the self-righteous that calls/demands others sin while ignoring their own
6. UNDONE – justly doomed to death – Isaiah saw HIMSELF as undone, not Judah
7. When we SEE the KING the LORD OF HOSTS truly, we see the same thing
8. When we compare ourselves to others, we see others as undone but not ourself
9. The Sinless Seraphim took a COAL from the Altar to cleanse Isaiah!
10. All men who HAVE SEEN THE LORD – reacted as Isaiah; Peter did, Job did, John did; the sinner of Luke 18 did, the woman in Luke 7 did; ALL who see themselves as God sees them understand this statement; only the self-righteous do not!
The Altar of Repentance Isaiah 6:6-8
1. Isaiah needed a CLEANSING and a COVERING of His Sin
2. The living coal from off the Altar of the Burnt Offering symbolized the fire of the Wrath of God against sin and also the Blood of the Lamb
3. The coal in the hands of the Sinless Seraphim when brought in contact with his “unclean lips” removed his niquity and expiated his sin
4. God had the power to redeem man without going to the Cross but because of His Nature His Character would not allow it. Sin must be ATONED FOR – ALL SIN. And by extension the SINNER must ACCEPT this atonement to be saved; To reject it the sinner is damned.
5. To address sin with a formal declaration would be the same as the law of the land dismissing crimes with the wave of the hand; lawlessness – anarchy.
6. Justification – NOT GUILTY; Sanctification – CLEANSING; Christ – PROPITIATION (COVERING)
7. The Altar represents CALVARY which sinful man MUST COME TO in FAITH before he can be cleansed and Saved; Man cannot come to man for that clean
8. Cleansing and covering!!
9. ALL essence of True conviction and repentance is tied to what man IS not so much what man has +6hat only can be accomplished by faith in the CROSS OF CHRIST, of which all of this was a
10. SYMBOL! Heb. 9:22, 1 Peter 1:18-21, Romans 3:24-25, 1 John 1:7-9
11. “INQUITY IS TAKEN AWAY,” and “YOUR SIN IS PURGED” – There is no other way to be cleansed and expiated than through the Wrath of God and Atoning Blood of Christ.
12. These are revealed and glorified at Calvary – God judged Sin eternally in the PERSON of CHRIST and His Precious Blood – it’s man’s ONLY COVERING and CLEANSING
God’s wrath will either fall on Christ and the Cross or it will fall on us. For those who don’t believe it will rest on the individual. John 3:34-36, Romans 3:10, Psalms 14:1-3, Romans 3:23
Isaiah 6:9-13
1. The Command was GO AND TELL; it was not FORCE them to listen!
2. All true Gospel preaching will convert the willing hearer and those who are truly ready to receive the Word of God!
3. Sadly, Isaiah’s preaching would not awaken Israel out of her apathy nor stir them to true Repentance
4. It would only harden and deaden them; the same sun that melts butter hardens clay
5. Isaiah is told there will not be a favorable response
6. Notice, he could not GO until his LIPS had been cleansed and HE SAW THE LORD!
7. Many “go” without inner healing and peace and produce bitter waters which produce bitter followers
II. The Blindness of Israel – 29:9-16
1. This is a judicial blindness that has descended upon Israel (John 9:41)
2. When we think we see, we are blind; when we say we’re blind, we see and our sins are forgiven!
3. Israel shut her eyes to the Work and WORD and the PERSON of the Messiah the book of God and its vision have ever since been covered with a veil to them and will so remain up to the Second Advent
4. 29:10 – POURED OUT UPON YOU THE SPIRIT OF DEEP SLEEP – spiritual deadness and impassiveness – an inability to appreciate or comprehend spiritual things
5. 29:11-13 – Spiritual leaders of Israel without Spiritual understanding devoid of spiritual discernment even the rulers but blind leaders leading the blind.
6. 1 Cor 2:14-16, cp. Isaiah 40:14
7. Upon conversion the Believer receives the Spirit of God (TRULY BORN AGAIN)
8. The Spirit always Points man TO THE WORD OF GOD – ALWAYS
9. It is through the WORD that we spiritually discern things and judge things – i.e. only judgement that God accepts – AS ISAIAH however we must JUDGE OURSELVES FIRST!
10. Only the regenerated spirit can understand the things of the Spirit for they are SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED
11. Paul in 1 Cor. 3:1 – “CARNAL” because their focus was on things other than the CROSS- spoken to people who thought they were spiritual giants – REBUKE
12. Many are spiritually DEAD and insensitive to God’s WORD – BLIND.
13. 29:13 – THE FOUR CAUSES of SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS
A. Drawing Near to God With Mouth Only
B. Honoring Him With the LIPS Only
C. Removing the Heart Far From Him
D. Fearing God only after PRECEPTS of Men
14. 29:14-16 – Israel’s blindness lead them to destruction (national, and personal)
15. Perverse thinking leads us to believe we can tell God what He needs to bless and what He Don’t.
III. How Long Oh’ Lord
1. The blindness will rest on Israel’s heart until the consummation of the judgement thatis to come is inflicted on her.
2. “great forsaking” in the midst of the land – AD 70 Israel was totally destroyed with millions of Jews scattered all over the world and remaining in that posture until 1948
3. 9:13 – Even if there only be a tenth left (2/3rds – Zechariah) they too will be destined to further judgement and destruction
4. The TEIL TREE and the OAK TREE are two trees that shoot up after they’ve been cut down from the stump
5. There will remain a holy seed that will be hidden, a living root cherished by Israel’s faithful God and the day will come when that tree will be eternally and blissfully RESTORED by God
6. Romans 11:16-18, 23-27
7. Isaiah 26:15
