Text: Acts 19:1-8
Acts 19:1-8 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, one Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit more in the last few weeks of His Earthly Life than any other time in His ministry
The Baptism of the Holy Ghost is an experience subsequent to Salvation!
The Holy Spirit is God; he's not a "Force" not an "it" not a "feeling" He's God!
As God he can be grieved, quenched, blasphemed, resisted, vexed, and insulted
They were in ONE ACCORD - ONE PLACE
The early church understood the power of the Spirit
This event took place 30 years after the initial Day of Pentecost
Paul finds disciples! (These people were already saved!)
19:2 - "Havin believed, Did You Receive?" They were saved but not yet baptized in the Holy Ghost
They heard of the spirit they did not understand the AGE of the spirit or the revelation that believers not BECAUSE OF THE CROSS could be baptized in the Holy Spirit!
At Salvation the Spirit baptizes the believer INTO CHRIST; At the spirit baptism Jesus baptizes believers into the Holy Spirit
Acts 19:3-4 - John the baptist lifted up CHRIST as the Saviour not baptism!
Acts 19:5 - They desired to receive what Paul was speaking
Acts 19:6 - Paul LAID HIS HANDS on them - A biblical principle A. Samaria - Acts 8 B. Annaias - Paul Acts 9 C. Acts 19 - Ephesus Disciples
The Holy Spirit came ON THEM - At Salvation - HE COMES WITHIN; at the Baptism He comes UPON! (Acts 2:1-4)
AND THEY SPOKE WITH TONGUES and PROPHESIED - Tongues are the initial physical evidence that one has been baptized in the Holy Spirit
Acts 19:8-10 - The Synagogue kicked Paul out for teaching this message; the Church is kicking those out who teach it today - "Divers were hardened"
There was a DEPARTING and SEPARATING! - THE TRUTH ALWAYS DOES BOTH
The truth SPEAKS THE WORD OF THE LORD JESUS!
This experience is for YOU and ME TODAY!
