From A.D. 1045 to A.D. 1046 there were three rival popes. During the reign of Alexander III (A.D. 1159-1181) there were four rival popes. The incredibly cruel Inquisition was initiated by Pope Innocent III (A.D. 1198-1216) and was to last for some five hundred years.
